Hi my name is Cecilia Delgadillo and I’m a 15-year-old student pilot and aviation photographer from NYC. I’ve been flying for 5 months and train in the Piper PA-28. I’m currently working on my Private Pilot’s License and more specifically my first solo which I will hopefully complete on my 16th birthday.
What got you interested in aviation?
Like most people, it was my dad who got me into aviation. My dad has been a lifelong aviation enthusiast and as a kid, we would watch aviation-related shows together and go to the park to play airplane. He would always let me sit in the window seat and explain everything that was happening on the wing of the aircraft. I also live under the final approach path for LGA so I’ve always been surrounded by low flying airplanes.
What was your first flight like?
I’m not gonna lie, my first flight was kind of nerve-wracking. I was 13 years old and barely had any knowledge of aviation, but I eventually eased into it. I didn’t exactly know what I was doing, but I remember having the biggest smile on my face. The moment I landed, I knew I wanted to fly for the rest of my life.
What do you like about flying?
I love how relaxing flying is. A lot of people believe that flying is stressful, and yes It can be at times, but whenever I’m in the air, the only thing my mind is focused on is flying the plane. It’s just me, my plane, and my CFI. That’s it. I also really like the people you meet. Everyone in the community is super supportive and is always willing to help. It’s like a big family.
What got you into aviation photography?
As I stated in a previous question, I live under the final approach path for LGA so I was always surrounded by low flying airplanes. At 13 my dad gave me his camera to mess around with, and I started aiming up towards the sky. That was around the time I got an instagram and discovered the plane spotting community. I got to meet some cool people who helped me become a better photographer and eventually became my friends. Today I do photography for my flight school and for a charter company! The best part about it is being able to inspire people and share the beauty of aviation with the world. Photography is something I would love to continue doing as my career progresses!
What’s the most challenging part of flying?
The most challenging part of flying for me is the financial side of it. Flight lessons and aviation gear are pretty expensive, especially in the NYC area. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with a scholarship from my Civil Air Patrol squadron and a supportive family who pays for my supplies. But as a teenager, the best way to overcome this challenge is to work summer jobs and apply for every scholarship possible. Making connections and putting yourself out there also helps!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue aviation?
Just go for it. It’s honestly so worth it. I know it may seem like there are obstacles in your way but that’s why flight instructors and groups like Women With Wings exist. We’re here to help and support you in any way we can!
What are your aviation goals?
I actually have a couple of goals. I want to fly corporate jets for a bit. Flying out of an executive airport has made me realize how amazing business jets are. They have insane performance and are absolutely beautiful, however, my end goal is to go to the major airlines and hopefully fly my favorite aircraft, the Airbus A220. I also want to become a flight instructor. I come from a background of teaching. My mom is a school social worker, and I already do a lot of teaching in my Civil Air Patrol squadron. Plus, I enjoy helping my friends with their ground school. Being able to help someone else achieve their dream sounds like a pretty cool job description.
